Biggest Cricket Stadium in World: Motera Stadium

The Motera Stadium, situated in Gujarat known as Narendra Modi Stadium, is built into Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel sports enclave in Gujarat, India. It was recently re-announced as the biggest cricket stadium in the world, which holds 132000 seating volume of cricket fans simultaneously.

The Stadium was created to organize T20, Test, and ODI earlier in 1983 and was primarily refurnished in 2016. Now it has become a unique spot to conduct international matches. 14 Test, 24 ODI, and 6 T20 matches have been played in the Stadium. The Stadium is also getting hosted for even arranged and organized by Gujarat Government.

In 2015 whole Stadium was taken down for further development. It was demolished and re-created in Feb 2020, which took around 800 crores to create a gigantic stadium. The Stadium was again named Narendra Modi Stadium by the Cricket board of Gujarat as he was the current Prime Miniter of India from Gujarat. This Stadium has also hosted the first-ever test match, played with the pink ball for the first time. It happened between England and India in February 2021.

Events Took Place in Biggest Cricket Stadium in World

  • One of the great Indian batsmen named Sunil Gavaskar completed his 10000 runs in white-ball cricket (TEST) against Pakistan.
  • Sachin Tendulkar completed one of his vast milestones of 30000 runs international format in the match against Sri Lanka on 16 November 2009 and completed his 20 years of career.
  • Mr. 360 degree named AB de Villiers scored his double century for the first time in the second Test at the Stadium against India during the 2008 tour.
  • Master blaster Sachin Tendulkar crossed the 18000 runs milestone in ODI cricket format in the 2011 world cup against Australia.
  • The first-ever day-night Test happened between India and England in February 2021 with the pink ball.
  • Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar scored a double century for the first time in October 1999 in opposition to New Zealand in the test match.
  • The ground is blessed with nine wickets hall by one of the most significant player histories created Kapil Dev. It was his 432 wickets to surpass Richard Hadlee’s figure in 1994.

Earlier, the Motera Stadium/Narendra Modi Stadium used to speak as Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel stadium. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was the first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister. Before naming Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the ICC matches used to take place in the Stadium of Municipal corporation of Ahmedabad, having the same name as Sardar Patel stadium.

Gujarat government gave 100 acres of land to extend the area to Sabarmati River to create a new Stadium. Amendments in structure started just after implementation of the making of the new Stadium. It was built in 9 months. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel stadium has hosted many international matches. 

Reconstruction of Biggest Cricket Stadium in World

The Stadium was taken entirely down in October 2015 for recreation. The total cost predicted for creating such a gigantic model which will represent India was around 700 crores. Although it got overpriced from the expectation of official and it took around 800 crores. Reconstruction was completed in February 2020 (one year of delay). As per the flying reports, the redevelopment of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel stadium is proposed by Narendra Modi.

Contract Details of Biggest Cricket Stadium in World

Once the process of demolition started. The official of the Gujarat cricket board opened their side for receiving tenders from bidders on 1 January 2016 through The Indian Express and The Times of India. Nine bidders took part, out of which 3 of them put their tender on time: namely Larsen and Toubro, Shapoorji Pallonji and Co Ltd, Nagarjun Construction CO Ltd. All three companies represented their models, designs, and details regarding projects, these companies were evaluated on various parameters like cost, time taken, accuracy and efficiency on this behalf they were ranked. An expert panel was formed to evaluate and judge. In the end, Larsen & Toubro was given the contract with the lowest bid and high-end work experience for 677.19 crore INR.

  • The redeveloped Stadium is widespread on 63 acres of land, earlier the Stadium used only one entry point, but now it has three. It haves 55 rooms in the clubhouse, 76 corporate zones, which can hold up to 25 persons each. The Stadium consisted of four dressing rooms that helped teams in covid situations be safe and comfortable into bio bubble. The Stadium has an LED lighting system on the roof. The roof the designed in such a way that it would survive an earthquake far from spectators.

  • The Stadium has various other facilities such as a big Olympic pool, badminton court, tennis court, squash court, table tennis, Theater, clubhouse, three practice grounds, and cricket academy inside. They’re also an extensive parking section in which 3,000 cars can fit in and 10,000 of 2 wheelers.
  • The official has already planned to connect the Stadium to the metro station by skywalk(bridge). The Stadium has 11 center practice pitches on which match can play with four dressing rooms.
  • The Stadium has become an iconic place. The popularity of this Stadium has reached worldwide and has given India a better outlook as a country to have high-quality stadiums. It’s the only Stadium which can hold 13200 spectators at a time. It is designed so that every spectator can get a good watching experience, making it one of the best and biggest stadiums in the world.
